The Cup has a new home.
Greetings PawSox Fans!
After the devastating loss to the Durham Bulls on Saturday, I find myself already missing the Governors’ Cup that was displayed here since September of last year. We all grew very fond of The Cup and we got to travel all round the region showing it off. Like all fans of the Red Sox often say, “Wait’ll next year!” I just can’t get used to looking at the area in the team store where The Cup was and seeing air. The season is over, the Durham Bulls have The Cup so I have to let it go. I have to somehow get used to looking at the empty gap that used to be filled with The Cup.
Many people had their photo taken with The Cup. One of the notables who took a photo was Hockey Hall of Famer and Boston Bruin Milt Schmidt.
We are only 197 Days away from opening day here to open the 2014 season, so now our job is to prepare for the upcoming season. It was indeed a very exciting season with many players heading north to Fenway, some staying, and some returning. We saw new faces from Portland and even had Clay pitch the winning game here to win the North Division Title. The marathon game on Friday was a tough one, a real heart breaker that could have gone either way. Last evening the International League came to a close as the Durham Bull were beaten by the Omaha Storm Chasers of the Pacific Coast League 2-1
At the game on Saturday, it was all Bulls. PawSox fans saw The Cup slipping away after every inning. The PawSox bats were silent but I never gave up hope. As Yogi Berra once said, “It aint over til it’s over.” Never give up hope. It was a perfect day for baseball, not too hot or too cold, just perfect. We had a pretty good crowd, but we wanted to see a sold out crowd. I tried my best to get people come out for the Championship via this blog. I did receive a note from Sherri Rego who let me know that the blog inspired her to come cheer on the PawSox with her family. Thank you Sherri!
When we opened the gates, Cookie was at the Main Gate handing out free Keep The Cup posters.
Up in the press box, announcer Scott Frazier went over the script for the game.
Paws is in the dugout while fans “Fish for Autographs.”
The starting line-up was announced and some kids had a great opportunity to join the players as they took their positions. A youngster got to join newcomer Shannon Wilkerson in centerfield and get an autograph.
The game is ready to get underway and Paws Joins Team President Mike Tamburro (L) and International League President Randy Mobley in the suite.
Its time to play ball as announced by this young fans!
As the game played on, the PawSox were unable to have any players cross home plate. Meanwhile the Durham Bulls had many. Little by little the perfect night for baseball, didn’t seem so perfect. However I still had faith! I never game up hope! Even during the last inning I was thinking that with just two grand slams, we can win this thing. However that wasnt the case.
Looking in the Bulls dugout they are all standing and have all filled the little plastic cups with water. They with two out in the bottom of the ninth, they are anticipating a win.
After the last out, the Bulls raced from the dugout!
They sprayed the water on the way out.
It was time to pop the cork on the champagne.
I do remember a photo like this being taken on the PawSox in Charlotte, NC last year. This year, it was the Bull’s turn.
Needless to say, the rest of the night was a depressing one. Perhaps the worse point came when I saw The Cup being placed on the back of the truck to be transported to Durham. The bottom of the case came off, and you could hear The Cup screaming that it wanted to say here! The clubhouse guys were able to wrestle The Cup back into the box and after quite some time, apply the bottom latches.
We will all miss The Cup and we will all miss The Fans. I will keep you updated on whats going on, so please keep checking back. Before you know it it will be the PawSox Annual Christmas Part, then the Hot Stove, the players will head to spring training, break camp and the roster will be set for the 2014 PawSox team. Every day that goes by, is another day closer to Opening Night! Looking forward to returning The Cup in 2014 and seeing all the fans and showing everyone that we will always be………..”Here For You!”
Love hearing from you!
Yours in Baseball,
